I became a fan of the movies made from James Patterson's books long before I became fan of his actual writing. I stayed away mostly because of the negative reviews and well, the movies were so good. Three years ago, if memory serves, a friend talked me into getting one of his books. Since then, I haven't looked back. I've mostly read his standalones. The Mike Bennett series consists of this one and the first book, STEP ON A CRACK. If you haven't yet, start with the first.
In RUN FOR YOUR LIFE, Bennett, a recent widow struggles to raise his ten adopted children with the help of Seamus, his grandfather, and the young and pretty Mary Catherine, who we met in the first book. One by one, the kids are coming down with the flu. All the while, he's still dealing with the loss of his beloved wife, Maeve.
A new killer is on the loose who calls himself the Teacher. He's a chameleon of sorts as he changes his looks between each of his killings. His targets seem to be people who are rude, but he has a much more sinister agenda that doesn't become clear until towards the end. Until then, his killings were a bit random until the Teacher and Bennett meet on the phone. That's when the killings turn personal. Bennett soon finds himself the next target of a madman.
Like most of the Patterson books, I prefer the audio format. If you are into audio books, this was probably one of the best. Dallas Roberts makes a chilling voice of a killer and Bobby Cannavale captures the essence of Mike Bennett perfectly. The transition between cop and killer is so smooth. I absolutely loved the combination.

If you like a good mystery and enjoy authors such as Harlan Coben - this is a must read! James Patterson has done it again! With the funny and wonderful character in detective Mike Bennett, you travel from a crime scene to a hospital scene right in Bennets own living room as all 10 (yup 10) of his children battle the flu.
At times I was jumping out of my skin and at other times laughing out loud. An absolute must read for the people you know that love a really good story with a fascinating spin. |
My first Patterson book and definitely NOT my last!!!!

Believe it or not, this is the first James Patterson or Michael Ledwidge book that I have ever read. Let me tell you this: for non-Christian fiction, I am hooked!
This book was fun to read! It is an easy read full of twists and turns, making it a page turner! I literally read this book in one night. You can see the killer's way of thinking almost from the beginning, and that, mixed with the humor that Patterson and Ledwidge add to it, you will be laughing til your crying and on the edge of your seat with the suspense!
The one and only thing that I would change about this book is the language. Because James Patterson is such a talented author and I could see that in this book, I over look the language.
This is the second book in a series, and I, unfortunately did not get to read the first book. However, from what I have done research on, I don't think these books would need to be read in any particular order...they are good as a series or stand alones. But all in all, I rate this book with 4 stars and two thumbs and recommend it to all the Patterson fans out there! And I recommend it to all those who haven't read a Patterson book before....it will get you hooked!!

James Patterson's latest thriller, Run For Your Life, is an exciting book featuring a horribly violent villian and a harried NYC detective trying to stop him. Patterson churns out a lot of books, and many aren't very good. But this book really worked for me, and I liked it.
James Patterson and Coauthor introduced a new character in Step on a Crack. Det. Michael Bennett, an NYC detective with 10 kids. Step on a Crack had an interesting hostage scenario as the main plot. Bennett's ten kids served as a diversion that really bored me. In the latest thriller Run For Your Life, Michael Bennett has a crazy life. He's still trying to get over the death of his wife Maeve, and he's having a horrible time taking care of his 10 adopted kids, all of which seem to have come down with the flu at the same time. He gets assigned as lead the detective in a serial killer case because of some work he did with the Feds awhile back.
If you go back to some of the best Patterson novels like Kiss the Girls and Along Came a Spider, you'll find they had a great villian. The villian in Run for Your Life is a great villian. He calls himself the Teacher. He is handsome, smart, horribly evil, and has a great plan to wreak vengance on those he believe has wronged him. The Teacher and his horrible plans are featured throughout the novel and this is what makes this a really good book. Some of Patterson's Cross books have an exceptional villian, but Cross doesn't actually do any detective work. He just thinks about things. Michael Bennett, when he isn't at home trying to help his nanny Mary Catherine with his kids, is actually doing detective work. Bennett is at each of the crime scenes, learning things about the killer, getting closer.
Patterson gets back to basics in this thriller. He reveals the truth about the Teacher one bit at a time. Patterson throws in a little romance as Bennett tries to move on from the death of his wife. None of the ten kids exist as individual characters, but instead are there to ensure Bennett is always tired and always stressed. This novel isn't groundbreaking, it is standard Patterson. All the pieces to the formula are there, and this time they really work. The Coauthor also worked with Patterson on The Quickie, which I thought was a really good stand alone thriller. Maybe these two have something going.

Wonderful Sequel

Michael Ledgwidge writing with Patterson has created a wonderful to sequel to last year's "Step On A Crack" which introduced NYPD detective Michael Bennett along with his 10 adopted children.
This story brings Bennett back to chase a serial killer self titled The Teacher. This psychotic lunatic stays one step ahead of NYPD's finest. Mike Bennett has been hand picked to lead his own squad of detectives in an all out effort to identify and catch this seemingly chameleon who is killing people in high class establishments all over the West Side.
To make matters worse, all of Bennett's children have caught a nasty flu bug leaving him an exhausted widowed father to care for his kids with the help of the nanny, Mary Katherine and his grandfather Father Seamus.
As the plot twists and turns, Bennett gets personally drawn into the killer's web as we gradually find out more clues to his identity and motives This is a real page turner and a very good read. I couldn't put it down. I hope we see this turn into another long running series. |

Run for Your Life is written in James Pattersons usual easy reading manner as well as interesting and captivating. He remains one of my favorite authors.
The Associate is another John Grisham legal masterpiece. He kept me on my toes. |

| The Mike Bennett character is a lovable and complex cop that you'll want to follow through book after book. A light read, the serial killer isn't too complex, but that doesnt mean there isnt a twist or turn involved in the journey of both the evil doer and the crime fighter. Well worth your time, if your not already a Patterson fan, this book will turn you into one. |
