Product Description

Following up their bestseller How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?, Caldecott Medal winner Jane Yolen and illustrator Mark Teague have penned this instructive lesson on dinosaur health care. Each double-page spread features one enormous dinosaur looking wan and sniffly but mostly cranky, petulant, ornery, sullen, and disagreeable. The human moms and dads are visibly worried and/or frustrated by their sick dinos behaving badly. Witness the nice lady dragging her gigantic Styracosaurus out of the elevator and across the hall to the doctor's office: "What if a dinosaur goes to the doc? Does he drag all his feet till his mom is in shock?" The look on this mom's face will be familiar to anyone who's ever forcibly moved a child, who seems to have suddenly gained a million pounds, from one place to another. And of course, it turns out that dinosaurs don't misbehave when they're sick: "He drinks lots of juice, and he gets lots of rest. He's good at the doctor's, 'cause doctors know best."

The rhymes are somewhat forced, especially toward the end of the book, but Teague's marvelous paintings are bright and expressive throughout. Each dinosaur is cleverly labeled, and these aren't your run-of-the-mill dinos; dinosaur-obsessed little ones will crow over Parasaurolophus, Euoplocephalus, and Tuojiangosaurus. They'll also learn a little something about how to behave when they're sick. --Jennifer Lindsay

The perfect Read Aloud!

Review Date: February 12, 2003

I have given Jane Yolen's first HOW DO DINOSAURS book as a gift to dozens of children and not one has been disappointed. I was thrilled to find the second one just as charming and fun as the first. It is the perfect read aloud for any child--sick or not. And parents will be happy to have such a wonderful book to add to the "One More Time" pile.

I am always amazed at how versitile Jane Yolen is. When my own little dinosaur finally drifts off to sleep, I can enjoy reading another chapter of her new novel GIRL IN A CAGE.

My only complaint is that my daughter may be too old when the next one comes out! Hurry Jane, hurry!

I purchased this book for my five year old nephew who is a BIG Dinosaur fan. I previously purchased for him "How do Dinosaurs Say Good Night" Both were Big Hits. Large print and very few words on a page and easy vocabulary to help the youngsters learn to read. Also helps the children realize that everyone, even Dinosaurs, get sick once in a while.

I have an 18 month old and we have read this book over and over again. Being a big fan of "How do dinosaurs say goodnight", we were anxiously awaiting this arrival. The story is a fun read and the illustrations are hilarious. It is a must have.
Sick, Grumpy, Misbehaving Dinasours Do Not Dissappoint!

Since the release of How Do Dinosaurs Say Good Night in May 2000, Yolen and Teague's How Do Dinosaurs series have been entertaining and teaching children how to deal with familiar, everyday situations. Each of the books uses short, amusing rhymes paired with bright images of huge, loveable, and expressive dinosaurs that act like human children and live with human "parents" that act as if there is nothing unusual about dinosaurs living in the human world. This book is no exception. Children learn about the proper ways to "get well soon" by first being told and shown all the wrong things to do by silly, grumpy, sick dinosaurs. Eventually, they are told and shown all the right things to do. (This same format is used in all of the Dinosaur books.) The dinosaurs' misbehavior - likely to be familiar to many children - is shown in such realistic and consequently absurd and ridiculous images that they are uproariously funny. Children may laugh out loud at images such as a dinosaur flinging his medicine out the door, another one dragging all of his feet outside of the doctor's office, and another refusing to "open wide" for the thermometer. The text and images of the dinosaurs doing all the right things to "get well soon" are equally irresistible. Highly recommended for ages 2 to 5.
Bad Dinosaurs, Good Laugh

If you loved Jane Yolen's first book, 'How Do Dinosaurs Say Goodnight?' you'll probably like, 'How Do Dinosaurs Get Well Soon?' Both are morally instructive. Dinosaurs act as children, and if by bad or good example, show the way they ought to behave. The dinosaurs portray a over-sized wrong-doers and get the kids to cheer on through their own capers while giving helpful pointers. The book is poetic and has lots of questions to be answered. Like, "What if a dinosaur catches the flu?/Does he whimper and whine in between each Atchoo? Then the readers can answer correctly what a dinosaur should do! Imagine what the doctor has to tackle? What would it be like of a dinosaur threw-up? Ewwwww! I wouldn't want to clean up that mess :)! Look out there when Tuojiangosaurus "opens wide." One of my favorite illustrators, Mark Teague expands on a smart concept of what is usually ordinary households in which the "child" is a big dinosaur. Still imagine a mom dragging her dinosaur to see the doctor. Imagine the human expression in those cute dinosaur faces. Yep, these dinosaurs are put through the gamut of sickness. These big fellas will charm and entertianment those little listeners who maybe confine to bed and need a little company. And, at the same time enjoy all the fun!

These books are great! My 5 year old daughter is a dinosaur fanatic and received "How Do Dinosaurs say Goodnight" as a gift. She loved it and when we found out there was another, we knew we had to have it. The rhymes are easy for her to remember and recite. And they teach great lessons that help her see a better way to resolve some problems with going to bed and going to the doctor. I only wish there were more....
Get Well, Get Well, Little Dinosaur!

This fine children's book teaches children about illnesses and how to get over them. Each brightly-colored dinosaur in the book has a different type of illness. Some refuse to take their pills, while others drag their feet while going to see the doctor.

Finally, the dinosaurs learn the main things that they should do when they're sick; take their medicine, stay in bed, listen to the doctor, and get plenty of rest.

I highly recommend this great book. My children love to hear the stories of the dinosaurs at bedtime, and the lessons about how to take care of yourself when you are sick are very helpful. The pictures are bright, colorful, and fun to look at. Pick up this great book for your children. They will enjoy hearing the story over and over, and they will learn some helpful tips for when they're sick.
Buy one and you will buy them all.

Reviewer: Tanya,
My nephew loves these books, I got him this book first around age 2 and luckily just in time, he wouldn't take his medicine and his Mom referenced "taking it like the dinosaurs" and he was all over it. He's got the whole set now and knows more dinosaurs names than I ever knew existed and corrects me if I pronounce them wrong. Smart kid, great author, and illustrator. You will love these dinosaurs, get it.

I bought this book for my son (who is 4). We already have its predecessor "How Do Dinosaurs Go to Bed". They teach great lessons about how to behave at bedtime and the doctors office. Both are bedtime favorites - he even loves to look at the dinosaurs on the inside covers! Anything Mark Teague does is beautiful work and I recommend his books highly. Jane Yolen makes this book very easy to read, my son knows both dinosaur books by heart. Beautiful book, a must for childs book collection!

We liked this book a lot! We liked that it had a rhyming pattern. We liked the illustrator. He uses really bright colors. His pictures made us laugh. He hides the names of the dinosaurs in the pictures. WE had to use our eagle eyes to find them. It was a very good book.
