Great Read-Aloud Adventure

My kids are a bit on the younger side (6 & 9 years old) but these books are fantastic to read aloud to them- they have serious appeal for almost any age and touch on topics that are of universal importance. I love that not only are there charaters and situations that I can relate to, but so can my 6-year-old.
What I like most is the high-flying(no pun intended) adventure and how I can leave my girls hanging, literally begging for another chapter. Makes it easy to come back to again and again- much as I hate to put it down at all(Ok, I read it straight through myself, first- what's a mom to do?). We have something to look forward to the next night!
All our favorite characters are back, though as one reviewer commented, not all get as much play time but I felt like in this book there was a good deal more character development. Don't want to ruin anything but the romance angle kept even me(old mom) interested.
I am a big fan of Total who provides alot of comic relief. Patterson has the fast pace and well-timed humor down pat in this book. The language flows easily and yet isn't 'dumbed down' and something about the way Patterson write makes me feel like I'm right there with Max and the rest of the 'flock'.
It's fast, it's fun and it has a little something for everyone- heros, heroines, villians and even a flying dog. Can it get any better than that? |
Max makes a splash!

Let me just say that after the last book (Final Warning) i wasn't too sure about buying this one. but i'm glad i did.
I always wanted more Fang and Max and this book has it. i love that Patterson actually developed their previously non exsistant relationship. They have more subtle hinsta bout global warming instead of like the last book where everything revolved around it and it took away from teh story, the mission, which is still the same Save The World. After she saves her mom of course.
I actully laughed out loud with Max and her witty remarks and Gazzy
Max is about Max going to rescue her mom from the people (i'm using "people" rather loosely) who kidnapped her. Mr. Chu, the new villan in charge.
so imagine Max in a sub marine for days, in small rooms, and Angel not listening to her and Fang spending time with Ms. Redhed again while Nudge is thinking about staying behind to go to school, Gazzy who cant seem to stop making things blow up, and Iggy who i am sad to say has a very little role in this book, which is sad because he is one of my favorites.
but don't forget about Total who has fallen in love. Mix all those things together with a clausterphobic Max and the adventure begins.

A fresh breath to a stale series.

I must admit, I had my reservations when it came to Patterson's 5th book in the MAXIMUM RIDE series. I mean, FINAL WARNING wasn't exactly Patt's A game....but once I sat down with the book, my feelings toward the series were renewed. Maximum Ride is a young woman who had become a science experiment under the cruel hands of twisted scientists. After experiments and studies and tests, her DNA is genetically altered with a bird -- this produced a hawkgirl. While being held captive, an kindly member of the demented scientist's core helps her and the other hawkkids escape. Max now leads this group of lost children who help her fight the evil organization, save the world, and reunite with her lost mother and sister.
When they do finally reunite, the hawkcrew is asked to perform some aerial stunts to raise money for a charitable organization -- they agree, and now the plot is set. Mr. Chu sends his cyborgs to snatch Max's mother and deliver a warning -- this warning comes in the form of a sniper's bullet. Well, after narrowly missing, Mr. Chu plants a message for the crew revealing Max's mother is hidden aboard a Navy Sub of the coast of Hawaii. This is merely a ploy, however, as he traps the crew inside the sub which is surrounded by unrecognizable monsters. I'll stop there, but book 5 definitely breathes life back into the series, that, let's face it, was getting stale. The action is non-stop, the twist and turns whip around at break-neck speeds. Patterson has a knack for delivering well-written action scenes while throwing in some of beat humor, and that is exactly what Max is. |
the kind of action only MAX can provide!!

If you have not read the first 4 books, go back right now and read them first!!! (Trust me, it won't take long--I went through one book in three days!)
MAX: a fourteenish-year-old avian-human hybrid (aka, a girl with wings)
FANG: her right-wing man (could he be more than that??) also fourteen, also avian-human
IGGY: super awesome blind bird boy (fourteen)
NUDGE: 11-year-old bird girl with a love for fashion!
THE GASMAN: his talent is exactly what the name implies (eeewww) 8-year-old bird kid
ANGEL: 6-year-old bird kid with crazy mind powers
That's the flock. they were created by mad scientists in "The School", a secret laboratory in CA.
We join Max in the beginning of "MAX" when she and the flock are doing an air show.
As they move from Oregon, to New Mexico, to Hawaii, we meet new, terrible villains... like Mr. Chu
...say "good-bye"s and "hello"s to characters...
...and embark on a dangerous rescue mission, which involves a submarine.
Angel is getting more and more mischievous, and her powers are beyond anything the rest of the flock can reach. Maximum is having a hard time keeping her in line...
Action-packed, will keep you reading late into the night, will suck you in and keep you in the center of the danger and wit and bird kid fun!
MAJOR developments in the MAX+FANG duo... good or bad?
Could there be a traitor amongst the flock's allies?
READ MAX!!!

| this is mt favorite book in the mr series, just above the 3rd. i am 11 years old, and an avid reader. i was introduced to the seriesby my aunt,(who happens to be a librarian) and instantly fell in love with the series. i read all 5 books in about 2 days. mainly i particuarly love this book for the humor, such as: "this is my brain: 0 this is my brain after making out with fang: . " i also love it for the romance, because maxs and fangs relationship really develops and blossoms. tiny tin can of death, hahahahaha. i love maxs witty quips, i love her. i love fang even more though. i think the plot was well constructed and i believe jk chose the perfect time for their relationsip to start before frustrated fans started sending him mail asking why the heck fnag and max havent hooked up yet. a wonderful book, one of the best in the series. i owuld give it 1000 stars, but i think my kindle would overload if i went that high. i am eagerly waiting for the next book, fang. |
Max+Fang=GREAT book.

Was a book easy to jump into and on the run with the story! It's James Patterson and he knows "Max" and what we want. I have loved "ALL" his books. I am ready for more! Would love to see a movie on each of these! The new "Star Trek"! Anyway, one group of books that makes a 59 year old female feel young!

So Much Better Than the Fourth

| Maximum Ride is finally back! MAX is roughly the same length as the Final Warning, but is definitely much better. The political message is still there, unfortunately, but significantly less so than in the Final Warning. There is more action, an actual plot other than 'The Globe is Warming! The Globe is Warming', and stuff finally starts happening with Max and Fang. Because of the political message, I wanted to give this book a four and a half, but apparently I can't do that, so it gets a five. It was definitely not a waste of time to read and please don't boycott this book because you didn't like the 4th. |
